“Mysterio Almost Made a Comeback in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Storyboard Artist Reveals”

Spider-Man: No Way Home, released in December 2021, was met with thunderous applause and open arms. It was a reunion for Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire and a party for the bad men. It was pitched as the first movie in the multiverse storyline and opened doors of the multiverse with multiple characters from the parallel Spidey universes. However, Jake Gyllenhaal, who played Mysterio in Far From Home, was not included in the list of comebacks. According to Marvel artist Phil Langone, Spider-Man: No Way Home storyboard did include him but the idea was untimely scrapped. Langone shared the drawings on his Instagram handle and wrote the sequence where the villain was supposed to enter the film. It could have been after Aunt May’s death but the idea was eventually dropped.

The storyboard showed Mysterio entering the scene under an elevated train next to Peter’s school. JJ Jameson was to be a TMZ style street reporter and the idea was to explore what it would look like if Spider-Man went berserker mode and held back because he didn’t want to kill anyone. Although the idea was never completed, it was still fun to play with.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a monster of a film and the buzz around it hasn’t faded even a year and a month after its release. It was a great opportunity to have Jake Gyllenhaal back as Mysterio, but unfortunately, it was not meant to be. However, fans can still hope to see the villain in future Spider-Man movies.
