Nadal: Tears fell from my eyes when Messi won the World Cup

Berlin: Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal has revealed that tears welled up in his eyes as Lionel Messi led the Argentina national team to a crowning FIFA World Cup title. Even for Real Madrid fan Nadal, there was joy to see ex-Barcelona player Messi achieve the greater destiny in an era in which many doubted that he could win the title. Messi, 35, was the shock force of the Argentina team in their success in winning the World Cup in Qatar. Messi scored twice in the final match played last Sunday against the French national team, which ended in a 3/3 draw, as well as scoring a penalty in the shoot-out, winning the Ballon d’Or as the best player in the tournament. For Nadal, who won his 22nd Grand Slam title two days after turning 36 in June, seeing someone else achieve success at the end of his career is something he appreciates. Nadal said: “Messi lifting the World Cup made me happy. For this wonderful player to be crowned with a lost title of this calibre, with all that that means for Argentina, seems only right to me. He added: “I liked it and was impressed. Without siding with Argentina, when Messi scored the third goal, tears welled up in my eyes. And he added: “This was due to the emotion of seeing a great person get what he lacked, as he fought so much to get it.” Nadal was also interested in Kylian Mbappe scoring three goals (a hat-trick) for the French national team in the final match which took place at the Lusail Stadium, as Real Madrid were aiming to sign the Paris Saint-Germain striker. Mbappé declined to play for Real in order to renew his contract with Saint-Germain in May, but it would not be surprising if he ended up at the Santiago Bernabeu. The question of Mbappe has been raised, in an interview with “AS”, which chose Nadal as the best athlete of the year. Asked if he could tolerate Mbappé if he moved to Madrid, Nadal said: “I shouldn’t forgive Mbappé anything, and as a Real Madrid fan, if he can, he can come tomorrow.” (dpa/stats perform)
