Netanyahu advances … and fears a repetition of the previous alliance scenario

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears to be preparing to return to power after confirming Wednesday Wednesday that his right-wing camp is on the verge of a major election victory.

The results of a voter opinion poll showed that his bloc is heading towards achieving a slim majority in Parliament.

Great performance of the far right

Thanks to the good performance of his far-right allies, Netanyahu, who is on trial on corruption charges, is preparing to return to power, with his four-party bloc expected to win 62 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.

Initial projections showed that Netanyahu’s (Likud) party and its allies Shas Party of Mizrahim (Sepradim), “Hattorah Judaism” of the Western Ashkenazim and Jewish Power, won 62 seats, enough to win a majority in Parliament.

Differences can change the scene

However, slight differences in numbers with the counting of the votes and the issuance of the final official results within a few days, the scene has changed dramatically.

Meanwhile, Itamar Ben Gvir and his ultra-nationalist list are preparing to become the third party in parliament, after Lapid, Yesh Atid.

Netanyahu is counting on the support of Ben Gvir and the leader of the far right, Bezalel Smotrich.

Despite the perspective of Ben Gvir, a former member of the Kach movement on terrorism checklists in Israel and the United States and previously convicted of racial incitement, in the next government worries allies including Washington.

However, the question of the formation of a government raises the fears of a number of observers that the previous scenario will repeat itself and disintegrate again under the impact of divisions.

Interestingly, the record of Benjamin’s 12-year reign as prime minister ended in June 2021 when centrist Yair Lapid was in able to form an unconventional coalition that included liberal and right-wing parties and an Arab party for the first time.

But the fragile alliance collapsed after a year in power.
