5 Netflix movies and shows like Downton Abbey

Netflix recently added all six seasons of Downton Abbey to its extensive catalog. The TV series has been top-rated on ITV and PBS, and now, you can stream it on Netflix.

The series was created by Julian Fellows and aired in 2010 in the UK and 2011 in the US. This historical drama followed the lavish lifestyle of the Crawley family and their domestic servants. The story takes place from 1912-1926 and features many important historical events of that time period. Fellows also created a movie that was released in 2019, and a second film is expected in 2021.

The cast comprises numerous talented actors, including Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Dan Stevens, Allen Leech, Lily James and Elizabeth McGovern. This list is only a small sample of the talent involved in this series. If you enjoy Downton Abbey, Netflix has many other period pieces that you will also enjoy.

Check out the list below if you’re looking for what to watch on Netflix.

The Crown

The Netflix original series The Crown is an intimate look into the royal and personal life of Queen Elizabeth II. This series has released 4 seasons with a fifth and sixth to follow that will close out the story venturing into the Queen’s 21st-century reign.

The cast has been changed throughout the series to allow for the passing of time in the storyline. We’ve seen Queen Elizabeth II in childhood and beyond. This series gives fans of the royal family a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle they lead and a look into what it takes to part of the monarchy.

Claire Foy and Olivia Colman have played the Queen, and both actresses have done justice to the portrayal of one of the world’s most iconic figures. Critics have praised this series for its acting, writing, directing, and cinematography. One area that has been scrutinized is the historical accuracy of the storyline, especially where it relates to Princess Diana. But, overall, this series is an amazing accomplishment and worth the watch.

Downton Abbey - Bridgerton season 2

Bridgerton

The Bridgerton novels written by Julia Quinn have a huge fanbase, so when it was announced that these books would be made into a series, her fans were ecstatic. Readers of Regency-era novels have longed for a screen version of the genre, and Chris Van Dusen and Shonda Rhimes have delivered.

Bridgerton, set in the Regency period of London, depicts the era with flair and with an unexpected but delightful twist. The series integrated diversity among the characters making the story so much more interesting. The creators have also used modern songs set to Regency instruments making it relative but still holding to the period.

The Bridgerton family is the focus of the series, but we meet so many other interesting families along the way. The first season’s focus was Daphne, the eldest Bridgerton daughter, and her search for a husband. The next three seasons will most likely follow the story of Anthony, Benedict and Colin, the eldest brothers of the eight children.

The fashions and extravagance of “the season” are enough to draw you in, but the story and the characters will keep you longing for more.

A Little Chaos

This film is perfection. A Little Chaos is a period drama directed by the late Alan Rickman, who also stars as King Louis XIV. The king has commissioned the design and construction of the Gardens of Versailles, and the most unlikely person is brought in to help with this project, a woman.

Kate Winslet plays Sabine de Barra, a commoner who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, who is hired to help with the King’s new garden. She works alongside Andre Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts), who is the head landscape architect for the project. And romance ensues.

This is one of those films that stays with you after viewing. It is such a fun and interesting look into life in France during the reign of King Louis XIV (1643-1715), the longest-reigning monarch in history.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a Netflix movie based on the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The film is set on the island of Guernsey after the German occupation ended in 1946.

In the film, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was formed when four people were traveling after curfew and made up this literary society to avoid being arrested. They continued to meet, and one of the members started to correspond with English author Juliet Ashton. After learning more about the society she travels to Guernsey to write about the group.

Lily James portrays Ashton and is joined by Michiel Huisman, Glen Powell, Jessica Brown Findlay,
Katherine Parkinson, Matthew Goode, Tom Courtenay and Penelope Wilton. Findlay, Goode and Wilton also star in Downton Abbey.

Although this story is fictional, it does shed light on what life was like during the German occupation, and the overall story is endearing and worth the watch.

Reign

Reign’s historical romance series blends the late sixteenth century with a soap opera, and if that sounds like a negative, it isn’t.  Reign is another period piece that sticks to the period and adds in some modern touches to keep things interesting.

The story follows Mary, Queen of Scots, and her marriage to Prince Francis of France. They reign as King and Queen over France and Scotland and encounter many obstacles over the course of their time as monarchies. There is, of course, Francis’ mother, Catherine de Medici, who tries to stir up more trouble for the couple. And, the infamous Nostradamus, whose predictions, whether true or not, were listened to and taken as truth which often caused more problems.

The story also includes many side storylines involving the Queen’s handmaids and their search for husbands from the men in the French Court.

The series ran for four seasons, and all of them are available on Netflix.

There are many other notable period selections available on Netflix, including Effie Gray, The Last Czars, The Promise, Versailles, Outlander and The English Game, to only name a few.
