New material protects against mosquitoes for 8 hours

Researchers in Italy have created new, odorless mosquito repellent formulations that last up to eight hours, are more effective than existing ones, and are less irritating to eyes and skin.

Journal notes of Agricultural and food chemistry that mosquito repellents are a weapon to prevent annoying mosquito attacks that do not allow you to relax even outdoors. And mosquitoes, in addition to all their troubles, are one of the most dangerous carriers of diseases in the world.

Diethyltoluamide (DEET), discovered in the 1940s, is used in the manufacture of mosquito repellents. This compound prevents mosquitoes and other insects from smelling a person. But it has a disgusting smell, and its action lasts no more than two hours. Its high concentration irritates the skin, eyes and lungs.

Researchers at the Universities of Pisa and Florence in Italy have come up with promising new formulas. The new compounds are various forms of cyclic hydroxyacetate, and after studying their chemical properties, it became clear to the researchers that they were highly effective in repelling mosquitoes for up to eight hours.

In addition, these compounds are odorless or have a pleasant smell and dissolve easily in water. The toxicity of these compounds is equal to or lower than that of (DETA).
