Newcastle crushes Leicester and rises to second place

Leicester, England: Forward Joelinton won a penalty and scored in the first half as Newcastle United beat Leicester City 3-0 to move into second place on Monday in Premier League. Defender Daniel Amartey made a disastrous start for Leicester when he fouled Joelinton after 86 seconds, forcing the referee to award a penalty, and striker Chris Wood fired home successfully. The 31-year-old New Zealander Wood, who played for Leicester between 2013 and 2015, came about due to illness of Callum Wilson. Miguel Almiron added the second goal in the seventh minute, launching in field from the right and exchanging passes with Bruno Guimarães, before hitting the goal. And with the league back after the World Cup break, there was nothing to cheer for the Leicester fans after their Christmas celebrations, and Joelinton made it 3-0 with a header from a 32nd-minute corner .Leicester forward Patson Dhaka called for a first-half penalty after a clash with goalkeeper Nick Pope, but the referee ignored it. Despite Jamie Vardy’s appearance in Leicester’s ranks in the second half, the team didn’t do much as Newcastle held on to win. Newcastle moved into second place 33 points clear of the champions in charge of Manchester City, who face Leeds United on Wednesday. Newcastle are four points behind leaders Arsenal, who take on West Ham United later in the day. Leicester remained in 13th place with 17 points. (Reuters)
