Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: What to Expect and Who’s Returning
The Longevity of Grey’s Anatomy
Since its debut in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy has been one of the top medical dramas on television, and nearly 20 years later, it’s earned the bragging rights of being the longest-running medical drama on American television. Will Grey’s Anatomy season 20 mark a victory lap?
A Cast Shakeup in Grey’s Anatomy Season 19
Although the show has always been somewhat known for its cast shakeups over the years, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 just might have shaken up the cast more than ever. The season introduced a handful of brand-new, fresh-faced interns and also bid farewell to its titular character… for now.
In spite of these changes, season 19 was met with positive reception from critics and fans alike for showing that there’s still a future for the series beyond what it’s always been. With this in mind, will there be a Grey’s Anatomy season 20 to look forward to after season 19?
Is Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Happening?
Yes! In March 2023, ABC officially announced that Grey’s Anatomy season 20 was renewed. The renewal extends the show’s standing as the longest-running medical drama currently on primetime.
Krista Vernoff, who served as the longtime Grey’s showrunner, left the show after season 19. Meg Marinis will take over the role from Vernoff after being with the show since the early days. Marinis was first a researcher and worked her way up to executive producer.
Will Meredith be in Grey’s Anatomy Season 20?
Unfortunately, Ellen Pompeo left Grey’s Anatomy as a series regular in season 19, which means Meredith will no longer be a constant visual presence on the series. Pompeo will still be an executive producer on the series and provide the usual voiceover narration.
But will she appear in season 20? According to sources, nothing has been set in stone for Pompeo to appear as Meredith in season 20. The actress will be filming a limited series for Hulu and has stated that she’s likely to return to Grey’s Anatomy. When that will be isn’t on the calendar just yet.

Is Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy the Last?
The fate of Grey’s Anatomy after season 20 has been a topic of speculation among fans, especially after the departure of the main character, Meredith Grey, who Ellen Pompeo played for 19 seasons. Many wondered if the show could survive without its titular heroine and if the remaining cast members would be able to carry on the legacy of the long-running medical drama. However, there is no need to worry: The show’s creator Shonda Rhimes has confirmed that they have no intention of wrapping up the show anytime soon.
She said that she has a vision for how the show will end, but she is not ready to reveal it yet. She also hinted that there might be some surprises for the fans in the upcoming season. In an interview with Variety, Rhimes said: “I’ve written the end of that series, I want to say, a good eight times. I was like, ‘And that will be the end!’ Or, ‘That’ll be the final thing that’s ever said or done!’ And all of those things have already happened. So I give up on that, you know what I mean?”
