The opposition media in Turkey revealed that the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) is attempting to weaken the opposition parties by cutting off their state budget aid.
Also, on Wednesday, the newspaper Hurriyet reported that a Committee of the Justice and Development Party is working on a draft law about parties and elections. This law says that parties with less than 7 percent will not be able to get money from the state treasury. The current threshold is 3 percent.
It also says in the Hurriyet story that the law lets parties known to be linked to “terrorism” lose financial aid, and that the courts have the power to decide to
When opposition media talked about the Hurriyet story, they said, “If the law is passed, it will silence the opposition because President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party control the courts.”
Keep Erdogan in power
The AKP has been working on an election law for months. People who are against it say that it should include changes that will keep Erdogan in power.
The committee, under the direction of “Hayati Yazici,” Deputy Chairman of the Justice and Development Party, is allegedly working on a legal text that will satisfy Erdogan’s needs. This text will then be sent back to the Turkish President for approval, and it will then become the National Movement party allied with Justice and Development. Before the party in power sends the final draft to parliament to be approved.
