Next James Bond: Henry Cavill responds to 007 story pitch – ‘It’s never been done before’

Back in 2005, Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond in Casino Royale, having beaten a young Henry Cavill and other potential 007s to the role. The Superman star has since had an incredible career and now being around the age the No Time To Die star was when he started, he’s very up for a chat with Bond producers about taking up the Licence To Kill next. Last week he said on The Graham Norton Show: “I would definitely have a conversation. From what I understand there are very early conversations happening at the top but there is no list as such.”

Cavill appeared on Lorraine this week with his American Akita dog Kal, named after Superman’s Kryptonian birth name Kal-El.

The presenter said: “I think there has to be a 007 with a dog. It’s never been done before.

“And you know your name’s in the frame for that. I mean, of course, you do.

“I think you’d be brilliant, but only with Kal. He has to be in it as well.”

  • ‘Excited’ Henry Cavill ‘definitely ready’ for next James Bond talks

Cavill replied: “Kal would make a brilliant 007 dog. I’ve got to say, Bond is already stretching belief when it comes to him being a spy, and so having this lugged around with me as well…

“If I’m trying to keep a low profile, it’s ruined with him whenever I walk around.”

Kelly added: “But I think you’d be great. And, of course, it’s going to happen at some point.”

Being a Bond audition alumni with best odds of 5-1 to replace Craig, the 38-year-old seems in prime position, but perhaps already being an established star wouldn’t be in his favour.

Aside from already being Superman, Cavill played a spy in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., a villain in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and now is set to play another agent in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming Argylle.

Moving on to his Justice League superhero, Kelly asked if he still had his costume ready if asked to return for more DC movies.

He said: “I do still have the outfit… just in case. Yes I do.”

She joked: “That with the tuxedo beside each other, ready!”, to which the star replied, ‘Ready and waiting for the phone calls. It’s been so long since I put the suit on professionally.”

After Kelly asked if it still fits, Cavill replied: “Yes it still does, thankfully.

“You look back and you just think, what a wonderful opportunity. And even if I were to stop acting tomorrow and go live on a yacht or a sailing boat and travel the Med…

“I can still look back and say I’ve worn a cape and leapt about the place and entertained some people.”

The star’s return as Superman is far from certain but he’s open to sharing the screen with actors playing different versions of the character from across the DC multiverse.
