Next James Bond: Watch Richard Madden reaction to 007 question as he battles Tom Hardy

Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise and for the first time in years, the role of 007 will be vacant. After a decade and a half in the role, Daniel Craig has bowed out as 007 in No Time To Die and now fans are speculating who could be next. With the release of Marvel’s Eternals last week, Richard Madden is shooting up the odds once again having sported black tie at the premiere in Hollywood.

Asked on the red carpet at an Italian screening of Eternals if he’d like to play James Bond after starring in Bodyguard, Madden was swiftly taken away by his PR without giving an answer.

The rep said: “We’re going to move on from that, thank you though.”

Of course, it’s possible that the 35-year-old didn’t want to talk about a topic that wasn’t promoting the Marvel movie at that time.

However, a couple of weeks on from this incident and he’s now in a three-horse race in the Next James Bond odds with Tom Hardy and fellow Game of Thrones star Tom Hopper.

  • Next James Bond: Henry Cavill breaks silence on 007

According to bookmakers William Hill, Madden, Hardy and Hopper lead the pack of potential next Bonds on 4-1.

Just behind them is Billy Elliott star Jamie Bell on 9-2 and Bridgerton heartthrob Regé-Jean Page and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland on 6-1.

Then on 12-1 is Luke Evans, Sam Heughan, James Norton, Lashana Lynch and Superman star Henry Cavill.

Interestingly, the latter recently addressed rumours about him taking on 007 next, having lost out to Craig for Casino Royale back in 2005.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter this week, Cavill said: “Look – I hate it when people start a sentence with ‘look’ – it sounds like they’re lying about something.

“I think it would be very exciting to have a conversation with the producers. In an ideal world, I’d never have to turn anything down.

“Nothing is off the table. It’s an honour to even be part of that conversation.”

Despite missing out on playing a young Bond in Casino Royale, the 38-year-old has played a spy in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and is set to once again in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming Argylle.

Vaughn said of casting Cavill: “I needed someone who was born to play Bond — which Henry is — and then nick him before Bond did.

“He plays a larger-than-life action hero with a wink. It’s very different from Kingsman.”

With the 60th anniversary of the Bond film franchise looming next year, the perfect time to announce the next 007 would be on October 5, 2022.

After all, it’ll mark Global James Bond Day and six decades since Sean Connery Dr No was released.
