An emerging competition will be the focus. The Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators will meet for the 2020 NHL Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl on January 1.
In a stunning move, the NHL selected Dallas, Texas for an outdoor hockey game – the southernmost city it hosts – for the 12th edition. Previously, the southernmost game was in Washington, D.C.
84,000 tickets have been reported to have been sold to more than 20,000 fans traveling down Nashville. The Cotton Bowl Stadium has a capacity of just over 92,000. Known for the history of hosting football matches, the 89-year-old stadium is ready for its first hockey affair.
Here’s what you need to know to watch the 2020 NHL Winter Classic from the historic Cotton Bowl:
Who plays in the 2020 Winter Classic?
Astronomical Dallas and Nashville predators will meet on New Year’s Eve. Last season, the Preds saw their Stanley Cup dreams come to fruition against the Stars in a series of six games. They have already met once this season with the Stars playing a 4-1 victory.
That victory came just four days after the sudden and unexpected firing of second-year coach Jim Montgomery on December 10. Dallas played well and will enter the game in a series of two wins. On the other hand, the Predators struggled to find consistency, mixing in the bottom half of the league in terms of points and lost the last two.
The Winter Classic marks the first outdoor game for both teams.

Where is the NHL Winter Classic for 2020?
Cotton Bowl Stadium hosts the SMU Mustangs football program as well as the former home of two NFL teams (Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Texans) during its nearly decade of existence. It also hosted the annual Cotten Bowl Classic before the game moved to AT&T Stadium in 2009.
The record for highest participation in an NHL outdoor game was set at the 2014 Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich., When more than 105,000 fans packed in “The Big House” at the University of Michigan. It is expected that this year’s game will be the second most popular Winter Classic. Second-hand ticket sales are also the second most expensive of all New Year’s Eve races of this decade, according to TicketIQ on December 15th.
