Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling around 144,000 Tundra full-size pickups in North America. The reason for recall is that the tonneau covers might detach from the vehicle during driving, could increase the risk of a crash or injury. The recall affects certain 2022-23 Tundra pickups equipped with optional Toyota-genuine tonneau covers. Out of the 144,000 vehicles recalled, 130,000 are in the United States. Toyota is advising the owners of Tundra pickups with the truck bed accessory to remove it until a remedy is available and installed. Toyota has not commented on whether it is aware of any injuries or crashes related to the issue. Toyota declined to mention the cost of the recall. Along with this recall, about 9,000 Tundra pickups, including hybrid versions, from the 2022-23 model years are being called back for a software error that may cause the instrument panel LCD display to go blank.
Toyota customers can check if their vehicle is subject to recall by visiting Toyota’s website and entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) or calling the automaker. The process will be free of cost. Toyota dealers will get the information about the recalled vehicles through the automaker’s Dealer Daily system. Owners of involved vehicles will be notified by late March and will be contacted again once a remedy is available, Toyota said.
According to Toyota’s statement released on Friday, vehicles without a tonneau cover are unaffected by the recall. Toyota will complete the recall without charge, once the remedy is available. Toyota can be contacted at 1-888-270-9371 or via their website for more details about the recall.
This isn’t the first time that Toyota has recalled its vehicles in the last couple of years. In January 2021, the automaker announced a recall of 700,000 previously recalled Toyota and Lexus models due to fuel pumps that could stop working or cause the engine to stall. It was the third recall for the same issue.
Japanese vehicle brands, in general, have a good reputation for quality and reliability. However, this is not the first instance of Toyota recalling its vehicles. In 2020, Toyota recalled around 3.2 million of its vehicles globally to fix an issue related to faulty fuel pumps that could cause the engine to stall. Several 2018-2019 Toyota models are also part of a recall related to airbag systems. Toyota has invested heavily in the research and development of autonomous cars, touting their advanced safety systems, yet recalls are not uncommon.
In conclusion, Toyota is recalling around 144,000 Tundra full-size pickups in North America due to the tonneau covers, which might detach from the vehicle during driving. The recall affects certain Tundra pickups equipped with optional Toyota-genuine tonneau covers, while the vehicles without the cover are unaffected. In a separate report, 9,000 Tundra pickups from the 2022-23 model years are being called back for a software error that may cause the instrument panel LCD display to go blank. Toyota is advising the owners to remove the truck bed accessory until a remedy is available and installed and will update the software to fix the issue.
