Omicron Variant Drives Rise in Covid-19 hospital admissions in Hotspot in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG — The emergence of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in South Africa saw a strong increase in Covid-19 hospital admissions in the country’s hotspot province over the past two weeks, although fewer patients are treated for serious illness then in past peaks, the country’s national institute for Communicable diseases said.

There has also been an unusually high number of hospital admissions of children under 2 years old in the capital Pretoria, where the cases began rising first, although some of these may be as a precaution, the institute said.
