Panthers lineman Vernon Butler punch tight end Jack Doyle, escapes crowd

Panthers defensive tackle Vernon Butler punched the Colts tight end Jack Doyle in the third quarter on a loss Sunday, fired on the incident and then flipped by fans who angered him when he left the field.

The worst part? Doyle wasn’t even the player that made Butler angry. That would be Mark Glowinski, who led Butler downfield to Doyle. The tight end of the Colts simply entered the junction.

“I thought Vernon Butler should have been fired,” Panthers assistant coach Perry Fewell said after the game. “This is not up to the level of our organization.”

Veteran tight end Greg Olson was more raw in his assessment of what resulted in a 38-6 blowout loss to Indianapolis in which Carolina quarterback Will Grier threw three interceptions and the team fell to 5-10.

“I think this season didn’t look like something I’ve been involved with for 13 years,” Olson said, speaking in general about his team. “I think it’s now a very collective failure, an organizational failure.”

Butler’s actions, of course, were the light of the wild presence of the Panthers. Fewell said the organization would consider further consequences for Butler in the coming days.

“I have to keep my temper,” Butler said after the game. “I apologize to my teammates and the whole organization.”
