Piers Morgan blames Meghan for GMB exit following her complaint to ITV just hours earlier

Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan, 56, has said that he blames Meghan Markle for his departure from the ITV breakfast show earlier this year, after he revealed that she officially complained about his comments to ITV bosses. The former newspaper editor blamed his departure from the show squarely on the Duchess of Sussex, branding her comments during the exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey “downright lies.”

Speaking on 60 Minutes Australia, the former newsreader revealed how the Royal had complained to his boss following his comments – which he hadn’t known at the time.

Piers said: “I didn’t know this at the time but Meghan Markle had complained to my boss at ITV on the Monday night.” (sic)

He went on to say that people “demanded” he apologise – or leave his position on the show.

“It was demanded I apologise for disbelieving her otherwise I would have to vacate my chair”, Piers said.

However, the Surrey-born presenter said that he refused to apologise and branded the move “hypocritical”.

He continued: “I thought there was hypocrisy, I thought there were downright lies coming out in the interview.

Talking to Australian reporter Karl Stefanovic, the star revealed that he believes his job is to hold the Royals to account – which ultimately cost him his GMB presenting role.

“I saw my job to hold them to account like I would to a government minister and for doing that, within 36 hours I had to leave the job”, Piers added.

Piers went on to brand the Duchess a “liar” in the candid interview which is the first he’s given since his GMB exit.

He said: “You’re not allowed to have strong opinions about things, you’re not allowed to disbelieving a liar like Meghan Markle.

“I’m sorry to call her that but she tells lies. We’ve demonstrated and proven that”, he added.

The controversial personality caused backlash with his comments about Meghan Markle following her tell-all interview with Oprah, which aired back in March.

Speaking on the ITV show, he said: “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said … I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report”.

Ofcom revealed that they received over 41,000 complaints following the contentious comments.

Hours later, ITV released a statement confirming the presenter’s departure from the show after six years fronting it alongside co-host Susanna Reid.

It read: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Following the broadcaster’s update, Piers took to Twitter to reveal that he stood firmly behind his remarks.

He wrote: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview.

“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t,” he added.

Piers continued: “If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.

He ended the tweet: “Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
