Piers Morgan issues warning to Alastair Campbell over starting 'fiery debates' in GMB role

Piers Morgan, 56, has taken to Twitter to urge Alastair Campbell, 63, to avoid partaking in “fiery debates” on Good Morning Britain. It comes after the ITV show announced Alastair would be taking the opinionated journalist’s old seat on the show as a guest presenter next month, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Following the news, the former Labour spin doctor shared a series of photos of himself rehearsing in the GMB studio.

Alongside the snaps, the writer informed his followers that he was “not the new Piers Morgan”.

Alastair’s post was quickly retweeted by GMB’s official account, as they welcomed him to the show’s team of presenters.

The caption read: “Welcome to the team! We can’t wait for some fiery debates, don’t hold back.”

Piers was criticised for disbelieving the Duchess of Sussex when she opened up about experiencing suicidal thoughts after joining the Royal Family.

Media regulator Ofcom then confirmed it would be launching an investigation after over 40,000 complaints were made.

The huge figure has since grown to over 57,000, meaning it has become the most complained about television moment in Ofcom history.

It was also reported Meghan complained about Piers’ words to both ITV and Ofcom.

Just before he announced his departure, Piers stormed off the GMB set live on the show after an argument about his dismissal of Meghan’s comments with his co-star Alex Beresford.

Following the explosive TV moment, Piers admitted he regretted his reaction to his debate with the weather presenter.

Alastair spoke out on his GMB stint in a statement, saying he felt “flattered to be asked” to join the programme.

He also said he was “delighted that my stint will coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week as Good Morning Britain has always championed good mental health”.

He added: “I am also looking forward to getting stuck into the big political and social issues at such an important and difficult time for the country, as well as brushing up my knowledge on some of the subjects that will take me out of my comfort zone.

“I must admit I am slightly dreading – make that totally dreading – getting out of bed in the middle of the night to get ready to present the show.

“But I am really looking forward to it.”

Alastair will present alongside Susanna Reid on GMB from Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 May.

It comes after ITV boss Kevin Lygo spoke out on the lack of replacement for Piers recently after his exit, explaining: “Piers is a special thing. You can’t replace somebody like him. There is nobody like Piers, for good or bad.

“We have a roster of presenters, including Ben [Shephard], Susanna [Reid], Charlotte [Hawkins] and Kate [Garraway].

“They’re all stepping up and doing a few more days than they would have done.”
