Piers Morgan urges 'wastrel' students who voted to remove Queen portrait 'be imprisoned'

Piers Morgan, 55, was left infuriated after students at Magdalen College hit the headlines this week, after overwhelmingly voting in favour of removing the reigning monarch from display. The students wanted the portrait to be replaced with “art by or of other influential and inspirational people”.

“This is about our communal space and making people feel welcome,” one voter was reported as saying.

Piers has since labelled those involved “insolent wastrels” as he fumed over their comments on Twitter.

He typed in view of his 7.9 million followers: “FFS. These woke lunatics are beyond parody.

“Can we vote to have Monarch-ordered Tower of London imprisonment powers restored for these insolent wastrels?”

His followers responded with their own divisive opinions on the matter.

One said: “If they don’t recognise our Monarchy then they obviously don’t recognise her Government and therefore, perhaps her Government should withdraw all funding and financial support, including VAT rebates etc. Let the Vice-chancellor pick up the shortfall elsewhere.”

A second replied: “Disgusting and disrespectful, but with today’s cry babies it isn’t shocking! Maybe kick them out of Uni until they have some respect for the sovereign!”

While a third commented: “If they don’t want to picture of the Queen there then simply cancel all funding to the university and students – I suspect it will be put back quite quickly.”

However a fourth noted: “Yes, calling for an unelected figurehead to imprison progressive critics will surely convince people that Britain isn’t a colonial anachronism.”

The president of the Oxford college, barrister Dinah Rose, said the students are entitled to “free speech and political debate”.

She typed on Twitter: “A few years ago, in about 2013, they bought a print of a photo of the Queen to decorate their common room.

“They recently voted to take it down. Both of these decisions are their own to take, not the College’s. Magdalen strongly supports free speech and political debate, and the MCR’S right to autonomy.

“Maybe they’ll vote to put it up again, maybe they won’t. Meanwhile, the photo will be safely stored.”

Piers’ angered sentiment over the decision was repeated by his GMB replacement Richard Madeley, who called the takedown a “thick decision”.

Holding up a £10 note, Richard said: “If you’re watching at Magdalen – you won’t be as you won’t be awake until nine – but assuming that you are, would you rip this up?

“It’s got a picture of the Queen on it, a bit of colonial culture going on there. So would you stop using cash?

“I can’t help but think that this is a wind-up, because it’s so stupid. It’s really thick.”

“Have they not heard of the Commonwealth? Do they not know what the Commonwealth is?

“That the Commonwealth, one of the jewels of the crown that she has presided over, is actually the exit from colonialism? Do they not get that?” he asked.

“I thought these guys were meant to be amongst the brightest in the land. It’s Magdalen College,” he despaired.
