Pirates of the Caribbean 6: Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow co-star shares update on sequel

It’s been four years since Johnny Depp’s fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie was released. But after losing his libel trial in the UK courts, the Jack Sparrow star’s future in the Disney franchise has been far from certain. As it stands the studio has at least a couple of Pirates projects in the works with or without their leading star.

One is Margot Robbie’s female-led spin-off and the other is Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Express.co.uk recently caught up with Johnny Depp’s co-star Kevin McNally, who plays Captain Jack’s first mate Mr Gibbs, and asked for an update.

Promoting his new movie Decrypted, the 65-year-old admitted he hasn’t heard anything and wasn’t even aware of these two films being in works at Disney.

Nevertheless, he said: “If there was, me and my bank manager would very much hope that Mr Gibbs was a part of it!”

McNally continued: “I personally don’t see how you would do a Pirates movie without Mr Gibbs.

“You have to remember that the last two movies, although they did brilliantly worldwide, weren’t quite so financially successful domestically in America as the first three. So that would be a consideration for them as well.”

Whatever the case, the Mr Gibbs star said he hoped the next Pirates movie would be sooner rather than later.

He added: “They’d better get a wiggle on because we’re all getting a bit too old to be on the high seas now. It’s 20 years since the first one y’know.”

McNally publicly supports Depp’s continuation as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates movies but is happy to play Mr Gibbs in any future movie regardless of whether his co-star features beside him.

The 65-year-old said: “No, I would be fine playing the role wherever I was asked to. I haven’t yet been asked to.

“I don’t think anybody is suggesting that anybody else plays Jack Sparrow. I think they’re talking about other characters and that seems perfectly reasonable to me.

“I hope Margot Robbie is going, ‘Please, please. I’ve got to have Mr Gibbs to show me the ropes!’ Maybe that hasn’t even crossed Margot’s mind, I don’t know. It would be a thrill for me to be in another Pirates film if there was one, yes.”

As for how Captain Jack and Mr Gibbs could return in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 or Margot’s spin-off, McNally is full of ideas.

He said: “I mean I was musing about this the other day and you can easily think of stories in which maybe somebody is looking for Jack and come to Mr Gibbs and say, ‘How would I find Jack?’ And so have a whole bunch of people on a trek to find the legendary Jack Sparrow.

“You can certainly keep those names alive, even in a film that doesn’t necessarily contain the [original] characters too much.”
