Hello, subnauts!

My name is Mario and I am a developer at Unknown Worlds, the developers of Subnautica, Since joining the team in 2016, I’ve mainly worked on the console side of the game. From early access to launch in December 2018, it has been an amazing experience to help develop and release such a well-received game.

The Xbox community has played a major role in the development and success of Subnautica. We are very excited to bring them to Xbox Game Pass for consoles and Xbox Game Pass for PCs. We’re a small team at Unknown Worlds, but thanks to our collaboration with partners and the support of the gaming community, we were able to share Subnautica with as many players as we could have imagined at the start of the game.

When we originally released the Xbox Game Preview in 2016, we were pleasantly surprised at how much feedback and support for the game was received by the Xbox community. Every time the game was updated, there was a wealth of feedback on the direction of the game, the pain points and the things that we understood correctly. We would also watch Xbox streamers playing and see what worked and what frustrations the players were experiencing and recalibrate our efforts accordingly. The Xbox community welcomed our company’s open development philosophy. We would like to thank you for supporting us as a team and for supporting the game.

Unknown worlds rely on our relationship with players, often directly through social media, to get feedback early so we can make better informed decisions earlier in the development process.

When I got there, we were in the process of improving the release timing for major updates to Xbox Game Preview so they were as close to their PC release as possible. The feedback from the Xbox community at the time was that they learned about the new content but were only able to try it out on their Xbox much later. With the support of the development team and coordination with our game testers, we were able to get Xbox releases within the same week as our key content releases on PC, often within a day. This meant a lot to our Xbox community and was shown in their feedback and engagement on the Internet.

Now that Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play Subnautica on Xbox and PC, we’d like to welcome all new and returning players. We have already received a lot of feedback about the new Microsoft Store version and are excitedly working on patches with bug fixes and quality of life improvements for Xbox One and the PC.

In addition to these patches, we’re working on some major improvements under the hood that match our work for Subnautica: Below Zero, the next chapter in Subnautica History. You can always find the latest news on our Twitter accounts and on our website.
