The Pokémon Company Apologizes After Scalpers Spoil Collaboration with Van Gogh Museum
The Pokémon Company has issued an apology after scalpers disrupted a planned collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Celebrating 50 Years of the Van Gogh Museum
A special line of Pokémon x Van Gogh merchandise was scheduled for release this week. The collection included a statue, a plush toy, a tote bag, and more, in celebration of the Van Gogh Museum’s 50th anniversary.
Scalpers Swarm the Museum
On Thursday, videos circulating on social media showed massive crowds swarming the museum to get their hands on the Pokémon x Van Gogh merchandise. Many individuals even bragged about their plans to resell the items for profit.
Online Release Leads to Rapid Sellouts
24 hours later, the limited edition Van Gogh merchandise was made available on the online Pokémon store. However, the most popular items sold out within moments, leading fans to suspect the involvement of scalper bots. These computer programs are designed to quickly purchase items from websites before human users can.
Over 2500 Listings on eBay
Currently, there are more than 2500 listings for Pokémon x Van Gogh items on eBay, indicating the extent of scalper activities.
Pikachu Promo Card in High Demand
The special Pikachu promo card, “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat,” which was given for free to customers who made any purchase, is now being listed on auction sites for over $500. Some sellers have even professionally graded the card and are asking for 800 Euros.
Apology and Plans for Future Release
Following the rapid sellout, The Pokémon Company issued an apology on their social media channels. They expressed their understanding of the disappointment caused and assured fans that they are actively working on providing more promo cards in the future.
“We apologize to all the fans eagerly awaiting our Pokémon Center x Van Gogh Museum release today,” they stated. “Due to overwhelming demand, all our products from this collection have sold out. We understand this is disappointing to many who were looking to our official email and social media channels for guidance on how and when to purchase.”
“We are actively working on ways to provide more ‘Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat’ promo cards for fans shopping at Pokémon Center in the future. Details will be released at a later date. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
Past Collaborations with Famous Museums
This is not the first time The Pokémon Company has collaborated with a renowned museum. In 2018, they partnered with the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, allowing visitors to purchase special Pokémon Trading Card Game cards featuring characters drawn in the style of Munch’s “The Scream.” Today, these cards are valued at approximately $670.
