Police: Attacker shot while attempting to stab officers in Old city of Jerusalem, dies later

An attacker was shot and killed after trying to stab police officers in The Old City of Jerusalem on On Friday afternoon, police and hospital officials said, amid heightened tension as security forces march: out an intense manhunt for six escaped Palestinian security prisoners.

The attempted stabbing took place at the Old City’s Council (Majlis) Gate, on the northern one side of the western Temple Mount wallsaid the police.

“Shortly after 4 p.m., the attacker armed… with a knife arrived at the agents post in the Council Gate in the old town of Jerusalem and tried to wound the troops there. A quick response from the officers and border guards, who open fire to the attacker, neutralized him before he could carry out this intention,” the police said.

The attacker’s knife was recovered at the scene.

Police say the assailant was over 50.year-old Arab man, a resident of East Jerusalem. The Palestinian Authority identified him as Hazim al-Joulani, director of the al-rayyan school of alternative medicine in East Jerusalem and an expert in Chinese acupuncture. His Facebook page said he used to do that work in Assaf Harofeh Hospital in Israel outside Tel-Aviv.

He was taken to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus in critical condition with a gunshot wound in The upper body, where he later died of his wounds, the hospital said.

“We go on met our activities in the field, but at the same time we must understand that this six men out of millions who live here,” said Gantz, speaking from a lookout in the northern West Bank after a meeting in the neighbourhood with the military officers leading the quest.
