Prince Philip hospitalized as a “precautionary measure” before Royal Christmas in Sandringham

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband, was hospitalized in London early Friday morning, according to Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Edinburgh is 98 years old and resided at Queen’s Sandringham Estate when he was transported to Edward VII Hospital.

“The Duke of Edinburgh traveled this morning from Norfolk to King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment for a pre-existing condition,” the palace said in a BBC statement. “Admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’s doctor.”

Prince Phillip was not transported to hospital by ambulance. Instead, it was a planned admission, and it should stay a few days.

After retiring from public life in August 2017, Prince Philip kept a relatively low profile and is rarely seen in public. The last time he was spotted was in May when he attended the wedding of Lady Gabriella Kingston.

The Duke of Edinburgh has also had many health problems in recent years, and the royal entered and left the hospital while missing the scheduled appearances. In 2011, Prince Philip underwent emergency surgery to correct a blocked artery, and in 2012, he suffered from a bladder infection.

Last year, he canceled his church service appearance at the very last minute, and he also skipped Easter Sunday services.

Prince Philip has been married to Queen Elizabeth for 72 years. When the monarch was crowned queen in 1952, he became the consort and was the oldest consort of a reigning sovereign in British history, according to Us Weekly.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are the parents of four children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – and they also have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

When celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997, Queen Elizabeth said that Prince Philip was someone who does not take compliments easily. But, she had to let the world know that the Duke of Edinburgh was his “strength and stay for all these years”.

“I, and his whole family, as well as this country and many other countries, owe him more debt than he could have claimed, or we will never know,” said the queen.
