It was only recently that a story about Irrfan Khan and Manoj Bajpayee competing for a side role in Daud was doing the rounds. It was the role of Paresh Rawal’s henchman in Ram Gopal Varma’s 1997 hit film. Bajpayee ultimately bagged the role, but after so many years, RGV has finally opened up about this.
Manoj had revealed that RGV had agreed to meet him for a minor role in the film. But when he reached for the meeting, Irrfan and actor Vineet Kumar were already there for the same role. Bajpayee claims he managed to wrangle the role away from his two competitors. However, the director has a different story to tell.
According to reports in Spotboye, Ram Gopal Varma revealed that Irrfan Khan was never approached. He said, “No, Irrfan was never considered for Daud. I didn’t even know him when Daud was being made. I had seen Manoj in Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen and offered him the role in Daud.”
On being asked about when, did he meet Irrfan Khan? Ram Gopal Varma replied, “We were introduced long after Daud. We never worked together. I don’t know why! It’s just one of those things that never happened. I regret it now. We would have created special magic together. I think he was an actor who could do anything.”
Well, fans would have loved to see the two collaborate and weave magic on the silver screen for sure. But it looks like destiny had some other plans.
Apart from Ram Gopal Varma, another director who regrets not working with Irrfan Khan is Hansal Mehta. He shared, “I will always share this date with him for the rest of my life. Every year on my birthday, I will be reminded of his rude sudden and unforgivable going. We did not ever work together but shared a very warm camaraderie over the years. I shared many drunken nights with him talking about life and a lot of other shit.”
