Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, acquired the majority with 937,000 auto, followed by its subsidiary Kia with 602,000 auto.

Among foreign automakers, BMW ranked first with a recall of 565,000 auto, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 352,000 units last year.

Industry observers attributed the rise in auto recalled at the rapid pace at which newly developed electronic technologies are introduced in the automotive industry, increasing the potential for technical malfunction.

The monitors added that also the increased consumer awareness in safety has played a role in increasing the overall number of recalls.
