The US Coast Guard has a rising number of Haitians in recent years. The more than 1,500 found at sea while patrolling in the waters around Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas over the last year represent a marked increase from 2020, when 418 were located — a number that is considered particularly low because of the pandemic. Like a result, the Coast Guard has increased the number of crews die patrol by air and the sea, Petty Officer Jose Hernandez said.
