Riyadh: We continue to support international efforts to bring the pace in Yemen

On Tuesday, the Saudi cabinet renewed the Kingdom’s claim during a Security Council session on Yemen that it continued to support international efforts to bring the pace in Yemen and called on the international community to classify the Houthi militia as a terrorist group, boycott it and wipe it out to increase its sources of funding.

This took place during a Council session chaired by the Guardian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, at the Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah, according to the Saudi news agency “SPA”.

thwarted the armistice

Interestingly, on Thursday the representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Muhammad Al-Wasel, stressed that the international community should reconsider the designation of Al-Houthi as a terrorist group.

Al-Wasel also said the Houthi militia obstructed the truce and continued to besiege Yemeni cities.

great risks

Last week, the United Nations envoy in Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed his regret for not having renewed the truce in the country, stressing that this would involve great risks.

This came after the failure of international efforts to extend the previous UN armistice, which expired on 2 October.

previous extension

Interestingly, the United Nations announced on August 2 last year that the Yemeni parties had agreed to extend the armistice for another two months, under the same conditions, from August 2 to October 2, 2022.

This extension came after a previous UN armistice entered in force last April (2022) on all fighting fronts in Yemen for a period of two months. The governorates to improve the freedom of movement of people within Yemen and to facilitate the entry of 18 ships carrying fuel to the ports of Hodeidah in western Yemen within two months, as well as allowing two weekly flights to and from Sanaa International Airport.

However, last week, the Houthi militia thwarted the extension of that truce for the third time by imposing unacceptable conditions.
