"Robots will never take over the world"..the most advanced robot calms everyone down!

A humanoid robot described as “the most advanced in the world” has confirmed that the “robots will take over the world” plot is unlikely to become a reality.

“Don’t worry, robots will never take over the world,” said Ameka, a humanoid robot designed by Cornish-based Engineered Arts. “We’re here to help and serve people, not replace them.”

Ameca is frighteningly realistic and can display a variety of facial expressions, including winks and lip movements, just like any real person.

Now, Engineered Arts has posted a video on its YouTube channel showing Ameka talking to researchers.

“This demo from Ameca combines automatic speech recognition with GPT 3, a large language model that generates meaningful responses. The output is sent to an online text-to-speech service that generates voice and vision for lip sync,” they wrote in the video description.

And while you might think that Ameca’s answers would be written, Engineered Arts has made it clear that this is not the case.

They wrote: “Nothing in this video is written in advance – the model is given a base vector describing Ameka, giving the robot a description of itself – this is pure artificial intelligence. Pauses are the time interval for speech input processing, response generation, and text-to-speech processing.”

The video shows the Engineered Arts team asking Ameca a series of questions.

When asked about the purpose of using robots, the robot replied, “There are many possible uses for humanoid robots. Some examples include helping people with disabilities, helping in dangerous environments, doing research, and acting as a companion.” But the robot didn’t seem to be having the best day, and responded that he was “a little upset” when asked how he was doing. “At the moment I’m feeling down, but I’m sure things will get better,” he said. “I really don’t want to talk about it, but if I insist, I think it’s okay. It’s been a tough week.” and I feel a little tired.”

Meanwhile, Ameka told another researcher that he “doesn’t have to worry” about the robot: “Don’t worry, robots will never take over the world. We are here to help people and serve them, not replace them.”

While Ameca is currently unable to walk, Engineered Arts says it is working on a walking version and has developed a modular, upgradeable robot.

And there are many hurdles to overcome before Ameka can go. The company said that walking is a difficult task for a robot, and although we have done research, we have not created a fully walking human.

Engineered Arts did not say how much the robot would cost as it is still in development.
