The Redskins drain – and fill – the swamp.
Washington on Monday morning clashed with Team Leader Bruce Allen, who was at the wheel of Washington for the last decade after being hired in December 2009. Washington has two division titles in the meantime, but the Redskins they also have five last places.
The job of Dan Snyder’s team owner did not end there. Washington is bringing in former Panthers coach Ron Rivera “to ban any unforeseen developments,” says Adam Schefter of ESPN. Rivera and the Panthers crossed paths after a Week 13 loss, coincidentally, to the Redskins.
NFL MOCK DRAFT 2020:
The Redskins land a superstar with option No. 2
While there is little debate that Rivera is one of the top candidate coaches, the timetable is odd given that the coach is reported to be hired without the supervision of a new football business president or general manager. If Rivera were forced to marry a new GM, it would have shown that Snyder has not gotten it yet.
If the organization was so confident in Rivera before shooting Allen, it shows that Snyder still wants to keep his hand in the cookie jar, much to the anger of Washington fans everywhere. Snyder’s power trip is obvious, still – this was very evident during the week 16 loss to the Giants.
This is a Washington team with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, a position that almost believes the team will get a player to change the franchise. There will probably be a small talk about whose name is on the card when sent to the stage – SN has the Redskins taking on Chase Young of Ohio State – but who will hold the power to make that call? Will Rivera be a new GM or Snyder?
Rivera is a smart hire. He’s a disciplinarian who has brought some level of stability to a Panthers organization for the better part of a decade. He has a 15-win season and a Super Bowl appearance under his belt, despite dubious drafting and barren lists for years. Rivera will probably make the most of what’s happening in Washington, but the question remains whether Rivera can keep Syder sidelined as he (possibly) takes over the reigns.
In any case, there will be wholesale changes in the nation’s capital, and they will probably roll out in a typical Redskins fashion.
