What do most people think of when they hear “Kraken”? You probably have some pretty scary images if you know at least a little about the legendary sea creature. Some movies that come to mind are Clash of the Titans (1981), in which Zeus (Laurence Olivier) tells the monster to attack the Greek world, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), in which Davy Jones uses the tentacled creature to drag his enemies down to the ocean floor. With such a long history in folklore and mythology, it’s unsurprising that the Kraken has become such a well-known lousy guy in many stories. There aren’t that many friendly Kraken in movies and TV, and even fewer end up as main characters. However, an animation studio that is known for turning classic tropes on their heads seems to be about to change that. That studio is Dreamworks, and their next movie, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023), will show a different side of the Kraken.
Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor), the main character of this new animated adventure from the same people who made Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon, is trying to be an ordinary teenage girl. When Ruby learns about her family history, she learns she is the direct descendant of a long line of royal Krakens. In this world, Krakens are sworn to protect the ocean, making it harder for Ruby to do what she wants.
At first glance, Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken looks like a story about an aquatic superhero, but it seems more like a story about growing up and taking responsibility. Here is everything we know about Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, including its cast, plot, release date, and more.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Release date
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, will swim into theaters just in time for Summer. The next movie from the animation Powerhouse will be released on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), nominated for an Oscar and made much money at the box office, is Dreamworks’ latest animated hit. Considering this, it shouldn’t be a shock that Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken will only be shown in theaters when it comes out this Summer. Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken will probably stream on Peacock, owned by parent company NBCUniversal after its run in theaters ends and it becomes available on VOD.

Plot of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken?
The official plot synopsis of Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken reads as follows:
This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the rough waters of high school with a funny, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who finds out she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny in the depths of the oceans is bigger than she ever imagined. Ruby Gillman, who is 16, sweet, awkward, and played by Lana Condor in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series, wants to fit in at Oceanside High but mostly feels invisible. She is tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who only seems to like her for her fractals. She can’t hang out with the cool kids at the beach because her overprotective mom (Oscar nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out) won’t let Ruby get in the water. But when Ruby breaks her mom’s number one rule, she discovers she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens. She will take over the throne from her grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda). The Kraken is sworn to protect the world’s oceans from the vain, power-hungry mermaids, with whom it has been fighting for a very long time. Right away, there’s one big problem: the beautiful and popular new girl at school, Chelsea (Schitt’s Creek Emmy winner Annie Murphy), is a mermaid. Ruby must accept who she is and take big risks to protect the people she cares about most.
Who is the director of Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken?
