Russia intends to create a “gas union” with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on Tuesday that his country is discussing the possibility of launching a “gas union” with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to support shipments between three countries and other energy buyers, including China.

Novak did not provide further details on what the gas union would involve or what stage the discussions had reached.

A spokesman for Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed such an idea in met with Tokayev on Monday but did not provide any details, according to Reuters.

While Russia is a major natural gas exporter, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan’s production roughly equals their consumption. A pipeline connects the two countries to Russia, and a separate pipeline runs through each to China.

The two pipelines mainly pump gas from Turkmenistan, while Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have not announced in previously the passage of Russian gas shipments to China or any other country.
