Russia is recruiting former Afghan forces who partnered with America for the war in Ukraine

According to the US magazine Foreign Policy, Russia appears to be monitoring US-trained forces in Afghanistan and try to recruit them to fight in Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has faced repeated criticism for the hasty withdrawal of his troops from Afghanistan after years of fighting in the country.

The hasty evacuation left troops and equipment behind after the collapse of the Afghan government and the rapid takeover by the Taliban. This means that the Afghan soldiers, who fought alongside the Americans and trained with the Americans, have been left in the unstable country until now.

According to a Foreign Policy report, which spoke with former officials and commandos, Russia is now trying to recruit Afghan commandos.

A former senior Afghan security official, who asked not to be named, said the integration of those Afghan forces into the Russian military in Ukraine would be a “turning point”.

Another former official, an Afghan commando, said he believed the Russian Wagner group organization was behind the recruiting campaign. And the

According to the report, the source said: “The recruiters are the Wagner group, and this is not an assumption, it is a known fact, and it is better for the Western allies to use those Afghan forces to fight alongside the Ukrainians.”

He continued: “The Afghans don’t want to fight for the Russians, the Russians are the enemy.”

The (former) Soviet Union committed war crimes and attacks on civilians during the 9 years of the Soviet-Afghan war in the 1980s.

Some Afghan commandos said they were contacted via WhatsApp and the Signal messaging app and received offers to fight for Russia.

Another military source sheds light on why such offers are attractive, despite the historic bloodshed between Afghanistan and Russia.

According to the report, the source commented: “Afghans have no status, no job, no future and they have nothing to lose.”

He continued: “It’s not hard, they (the Afghan forces) are waiting to work for $ 3-4 $ a day in Pakistan or Iran or $ 10 per day in Turkey, and if Wagner or any other intelligence service comes up with an offer of $ 1,000 they will accept it. “
