Russia: We targeted Kiev during Guterres’ visit

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed it had carried out a “high-precision” air strike on Kiev, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was in visit to the Ukrainian capital.

During its daily briefing on the crisis, the ministry said that long-range, high-precision aerial weapons from the Russian Air Force destroyed the premises of the Artyom Missile and Aerospace Company in Kiev.

First successes of its kind

Kiev was the subject of Russian bombing on Thursday evening, in coinciding with the visit of the highest UN official in the first such attacks on the capital since mid-April, according to AFP correspondents.

AFP reporters also saw a fire engulf a floor in one of the buildings in the capital and the windows broken, while a large number of security and ambulance officers were deployed on the spot.

For his part, the director of the Ukrainian President’s Office, Mikhailo Podolyak, confirmed Thursday that the capital, Kiev, had witnessed missile attacks during the official visit of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

“Rockets in the center of Kiev during Antonio Guterres’ official visit. The day before he was sitting at a long table in the Kremlin, today the explosives are over his head,” Podolyak wrote on his official Twitter account.

Ukrainian critique of Guterres

Interestingly, the UN Secretary-General had arrived in Ukraine, after a visit on Tuesday to Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the conflict between the two countries, push for calm, and in particular the evacuation of civilians from the city of Mariupol.

While the Ukrainian presidency harshly criticized him, due to the program of that visit, which should have started in Kiev, according to Zelensky, who during one of his video speeches, commenting on the visit of the UN official, said: “I do not see corpses on the streets of Moscow “, referring to destruction and death. That hit the Ukrainian capital, which requires a strong message of support from the United Nations, embodied by visiting it first.

It is noteworthy that since the beginning of the Russian military operation on the territory of its western neighbor, the United Nations has condemned the fighting and the conflict, while the Western countries have sided with Kiev, supporting it with weapons and equipment, against Moscow, which has imposed thousands of sanctions.
