Russian official: By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko said that by 2050 the amount of plastic in the oceans will be more than fish, if people maintain their current consumption rates.

Abramchenko said in an interview with the Novosti agency: “When each banana is in a separate plastic package and each candy is in a separate package, it’s terrible. And we, as consumers, did it all together. And we have voted for all this for years Entrepreneurship has agreed to this in order to realize It could lead to disaster, 10 million tons of plastic falls into the world’s oceans every year and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish if people continue consume in this way.

She pointed out that the task of the state is to encourage entrepreneurs to invest in processing.

She explained: “There are ready-made projects in the field of waste sorting, and the regions have learned how to implement them. As for the creation of waste disposal facilities, this is still a difficult task. to everyone involved in the process, that we must halve the level of waste disposal.”

To achieve this goal, she added, it is necessary to change the “consumer culture”.

She continued: “Despite the seemingly forgotten ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) agenda, Russian business is ready to invest in new processing technologies. I was amazed: even though we launched the Circular Economy project last year, “Twenty-five companies have already signed agreements on the recreated territories of ecoparks and will build 44 production facilities. And this is in our difficult time, and this is a huge investment.”
