Security Council: The Lebanese government needs to implement reforms quickly

The UN Security Council urged the new Lebanese government to promptly implement and in transparently the necessary reforms and invited in a declaration today, Monday, all Lebanese parties to distance themselves from any external conflicts.

Council members stressed the need for free and fair elections in Lebanon in 2022, emphasizing their strong support for Lebanon’s stability, security, territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence, in in line with the decisions of the Council.

In parallel, the Security Council stressed the need for a timely and independent investigation into the explosion in the port of Beirut in August last year.

13 months of free time

On Monday, the Lebanese parliament gave its confidence to the new government led by Najib Mikati, formed after 13 months of emptiness, and which is carrying out difficult tasks, in particularly trying to stop the economic collapse of the country.

After discussing the ministerial statement during a long 8-hour session, 85 MPs gave their confidence to the new government, while 15 MPs denied their confidence.

Najib Mikati’s government completed its ministerial statement at a pace record, and was represented before the incomplete parliament, after 8 resignations in following the explosion of the port of Beirut and the death of 3 deputies.

Interestingly, the International Monetary Fund has said that the formation of a Lebanese government with a clear mandate is necessary to implement much-needed economic reforms to lift the country out of the financial crisis.

Foreign donors have repeatedly stressed that they will not lend a hand to debt-mired Lebanon unless Lebanese politicians address corruption and waste as the root cause of the collapse.
