Sega Considering Sonic Remakes and Reboots, Alongside New Titles, Says Company President
Sega Considers More Sonic Remakes and Reboots
Sega President and COO Yukio Sugino has announced that the company is exploring the possibility of releasing more Sonic remakes and reboots, alongside new titles.
In an interview with Famitsu (translated by AsumeTech), Sugino expressed that while reboots and remakes may not be suitable for all of Sega’s properties, they are focusing on what is best for each individual IP. For Sonic, this could mean more remakes and reboots.
Sugino stated, “Of course, we have to do new things, but not all IPs are the same for new releases and reboots. For each IP, we will choose which method is appropriate at this time. Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and we are considering reboots and remakes for it in parallel with new titles.”
Potential Return of Classic Franchises
In an interview with AsumeTech at Summer Game Fest, Sonic creative officer Takashi Iizuka was asked if the return of 2D Sonic and the revival of Samba de Amigo could lead to the return of other classic franchises like Nights or Burning Rangers.
Iizuka responded, “I can’t say yes to anything right now. These days I’m the creative officer for Sonic the Hedgehog, so I’m totally focused on that side of the business. So I can’t really speak for anyone else, but Sonic Team in Japan has been expanding and hiring lots of people recently – they have more staff than ever. So there may be a future where you’ll hear about these kinds of titles.”
Potential Big-Budget Reboots
Last year, Bloomberg reported that Sega is working on big-budget reboots of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. These titles are expected to be part of Sega’s ‘Super Game’ initiative, a five-year strategy involving the development of AAA titles that leverage Sega’s comprehensive range of technologies.
New Sonic Game: Sonic Superstars
A brand new Sonic game, Sonic Superstars, is set to be released later this year. Developed by Arzest, the Japanese studio led by the mascot’s original creator Naoto Ohshima, this four-player side-scrolling platformer will take players on a journey through the beautiful North Star Islands, where they will encounter enormous creatures, thrilling adventures, and face evil plans from Dr Eggman. Players will also have the opportunity to acquire new abilities called the Emerald Powers by collecting Chaos Emeralds.
