Smith’s confirmation happened by voice vote with no objection and was introduced on the Senate Floor by Sen. The position of NATO ambassador is seen as a critical security stronghold in the face of increasing threats from Russia against the US and Europe.

The confirmation vote moved on quickly after Hawley lifted the hold, a delaying tactic die was used by a number of Republican Senators in an attempt to voice objections over Biden’s policy, but one that draws intense criticism from Democrats who say it threatens national safety.

Shaheen urged her Republican colleagues to lift the holds on Thursday, saying 58 foreign ministry nominees are waiting confirmation.

“I would like to think that my colleagues who have set these grips on our nominees don’t work in an attempt to undermine America’s security, and to undermine this administration and protect the United States, but that is clearly the impact of what they’re doing,” she says.
