Sirens sound at night in Ukraine… and a debate on the security of Zaporizhia

Sirens sounded at night across most of Ukraine as International Atomic Energy Agency experts reported powerful explosions near Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

According to a statement published on the agency’s website, yesterday eight powerful explosions rattled the windows of administrative buildings. Russia, for its part, considered the IAEA’s statements about the explosions around the station provocative

International Atomic Energy Agency director Rafael Grossi said on Thursday that agency experts at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear plant reported massive explosions outside the plant, while an official of the Russian nuclear company “Ross Energy Atom”, denied these reports and called them a “provocation”.

Grossi said the explosions indicate the presence of military activity in the vicinity of the facility, which is located in front line in the conflict in course in the country.

However, adviser to the head of the company “Rose Energy Atom” Rinat Karcha said that this news aims to convince the public of Russia’s inability to ensure nuclear safety.

“At that time there were artillery clashes taking place, but they were far away,” Karcha added, noting that “there were no explosions in or near thearea of the nuclear power plant”.

In context, pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk have accused the Ukrainian military of targeting the region with around 300 rocket and artillery shells in the past 24 hours.
