Slowing Down Aging: The Role of Nutrients

Gastroenterologist Dr. Anna Karchieva said that fermented foods and foods high in dietary fiber can slow down the aging process.

The doctor notes that eating foods rich in dietary fiber, as well as fermented foods, can reduce the risk of developing a number of diseases.

According to her, the gut microbiome (intestinal bacteria) is one of the most important factors affecting the health of the body, because it depends on the functioning of the immune system and the fight against infections.

“The more diverse the composition of the microbiome, the better the body’s defense against negative processes,” she says.

She adds: Nutrition determines the components of the microbiome. Therefore, it is important to eat foods rich in dietary fiber, as studies have shown that eating 25 grams of dietary fiber per day can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and colon cancer by 30 percent.

It is noteworthy that dietary fiber is present in large quantities in brown rice, oatmeal and bulgur, as well as in seeds, nuts, legumes, vegetables and fruits.

And the doctor notes that fermented foods are also good for the microbiome.

“Cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, pickled apples, kimchi (a traditional and important Korean food) and others are very healthy and have a positive effect on the gut microbiome,” she says.

According to her, the longevity of South Koreans is largely due to their diet, which includes fermented foods.
