Somalia. Agreement to hold elections by 25 February

Somali officials announced on Sunday that they had reached an agreement to hold legislative elections by 25 February, after repeated delays.

A statement released after several days of consultations held by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Robley with the rulers of various Somali states said that “the elections in course for the People’s Assembly will be completed between January 15 and February 25, 2022 “.

Robley and Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, nicknamed Farmajo, have long been in disagreement on the electoral crisis, with the fear that the dispute could become violent.

Farmajo suspended Robley’s duties last month, but the prime minister accused the president of an “attempted coup” and challenged his decision, while Farmajo himself faced calls from opposition leaders to leave. his assignment.

The elections in Somalia are organized according to a complex and indirect model, in on the basis of which state legislatures and clan delegates choose the members of the national parliament, who in turn choose the president.
