Sony Expects PlayStation 5 Hardware Sales to Decline and Plans No Major Franchise Titles in Next Fiscal Year
Sony has announced that it expects sales of the PlayStation 5 to gradually decrease in the next fiscal year. This means that there will be no major existing franchise titles released during that time. Despite this, the company reported record-breaking revenue for the three months ending on December 31, 2023.
Sony initially aimed to sell 25 million PS5 units by March 2024 but only managed to sell 16.4 million by the end of the latest quarter. As a result, the company has revised its sales forecast, now expecting to fall short of its original target by 4 million units.
In terms of software, Sony highlighted the success of Marvel Spider-Man 2, which has sold 10 million units. The entire Marvel Spider-Man series has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.
The PlayStation Network also saw a significant increase in monthly active users, reaching a record high of 123 million. Additionally, software sales for the PS4 and PS5 increased by 3.2 million units year-over-year.
While there may not be any major releases for existing franchise titles in the next fiscal year, Sony has launched a new PS5 Slim model and is rumored to be planning the release of a PS5 Pro console in late 2024.
