South Korea reports high death toll from stampede

South Korean Prime Minister Han Duk-soo announced on Monday that the official death toll rose to 154 in the stampede that occurred during Halloween celebrations in the capital, Seoul, on Saturday night.

Han has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

In statements at the start of a televised meeting, he said the government will make the necessary changes to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.

Dozens, mostly young people, were killed Saturday night when crowds poured into the narrow streets of Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood during Halloween celebrations. The government has declared public mourning.
