Sparklite Preview – The culmination of a dream in the indie scene
For the co-founders of Red Blue Games, Edward and Lucas Rowe, developing games has always been associated with their indescribable bondage as twin brothers.
“We would level Paper Mario on paper spools,” Lucas recalls with a smile.
“We would take those paper spools and draw at both ends until you hit in the middle and have a world,” adds Edward. “We quarreled with stick figures, each of whom drew one picture, and you filled it one by one to fight each other by completing the drawing.”
Since childhood, Edward and Lucas have always made games together, whether on spools of paper, with the HyperCard program on a Mac Plus, or with something outside of a Lego set and their creativity to create a Dungeons & Dragons game. Games became a passion that both knew was part of their future.
“The running theme of our childhood is just that we entertain each other by making games,” says Lucas.
Games have deepened their bondage, but as the couple got older and their programming skills increased, the two put their passion for collaborative work on hold to make a career in programming and in families. That was until 2013, when the brothers finally decided that it was time to take the plunge and return to their love of making games.
“We’ve reached a point where both of us were ready, and I think there’s a window in your life where you can do that and this window was open,” says Lucas. “We knew it would end soon, so we took the chance to do it if we could.”
This brings us to Sparklite, the duo’s first major foray into the indie scene. The adventure game features great images and a unique soundtrack, a relevant story and protagonist, and a gameplay loop that appeals to anyone familiar with the genre. The Rowe brothers are confident to make a splash with Sparklite.
