Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Release date, Plot, Cast,Trailer and Everything We Know

Even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking over the superhero movie business (and, honestly, the whole movie business), that hasn’t stopped other people from trying to get in on the action. One of the best examples is Sony, which has owned the rights to Spider-Man, one of Marvel’s most popular characters since the first movie came out in 2002. They’ve primarily been working on their universe of villains, which includes the first two Venom movies, Morbius in 2022, and more solo movies for Kraven the Hunter in 2023 and El Muerto in 2024. But Sony made one other important movie that no one saw coming, and it made Marvel history as the first movie based on a Marvel comic to win a prestigious Academy Award. That movie was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar over Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) and Incredibles 2 (2018) in a historic upset.

Almost everyone agrees that Into the Spider-Verse is Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a fan-favorite comic book character,’s best animated big-screen debut. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t just a great Spider-Man movie—it’s arguably the best made. It has a unique art style, well-developed characters, a story that makes you feel things, and more. Fans can return to the Spider-Verse with Miles and his friends in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), the second movie in a planned trilogy.

The highly anticipated sequel is already giving fans more of what they wanted to see, mostly other universes we didn’t see in the first movie. Now, we’ll see not one, not two, but six different universes in the film, each with its art style, as Miles and his group of Spider-Mans from different dimensions work together to stop a new threat. The release schedule for Across the Spider-Verse has been rocky, with multiple delays. To find out what we know about Miles Morales’ next adventure, just read on to find out everything we know.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Release date

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of many movies that had to be pushed back because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its original release date, April 8, 2022, was changed to October 7, 2022. That’s the date shown in the trailer above, but the movie has been pushed back again since then. The movie will now officially come out on June 2, 2023. We hope there won’t be another delay, but if it means getting a sequel as good as the first one, we’ll be happy to wait.

Watch the Trailers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The first teaser gives us our first look at the return to this amazing animated multiverse, but some of its information needs to be updated. The teaser starts where the last movie left off, with Miles listening to the hit song “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee from Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) comes back from another portal in time and space to stop him from relaxing. After their last adventure, Miles is confused and surprised to see his crush from another dimension. Gwen doesn’t explain how or why she’s back but instead invites “New York’s One and Only Spider-Man” on a swing through the city.

All of a sudden, Miles in his own Spider-Man suit starts to fall into new dimensions, each of which has its own art style. As he falls through the multiverse, Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), who first appeared in a teaser at the end of Into the Spider-Verse, stops him. Unlike the other Spider-Men Miles has met, this one is more hostile. Before the teaser cuts to a title card, they fight. The subtitle “Part One” is no longer on that title card, even though a third movie has been confirmed and is on its way. The date listed at the end of the two-and-a-half-minute trailer must be corrected.

The second trailer is set up the same way as the first one. Most of it is a recap of Miles’ story so far as he has an emotional talk with his mother. It takes a little while for the mind-bending world of the Spider-verse to show up. Along with the return of Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and the introduction of Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), we also get to see a facility with dozens and dozens of Spider-Man variations, from old comic references like the Amazing Bag-Man to more recent fan favorites like Peter and Miles from Spider-Man PS4. Even though it doesn’t look like all of these Spider-Men are working together, Miles fights not only with the many different versions but also with Spider-Man 2099, who could be the group’s leader.

The movie’s main plot is the focus of the second full trailer. In what part of the Spider-Verse does Miles fit? He meets Spider-Man 2099, whose name is Isaac. Isaac seems to be against Miles joining their team of Spider-Men. He even mentions the nerd and Doctor Strange of Earth-199999, which is a reference to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Miles has to go his own way, but will that stop what’s coming?

What Is the Plot of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?

The official plot synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse reads as follows:

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

Director Kemp Powers (Soul) recently told us who that powerful lousy guy is, and it’s a bit of a surprise. Instead of the usual suspects like Green Goblin or Doc Ock, this will be a lesser-known B-lister named The Spot (Jason Schwartzman). He will be a powerful threat because he can move freely between universes. We also know that there will be a lot of different kinds of people there. Writers and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who also worked on The LEGO Movie, have said there will be a whopping 240 characters and the story will take place in six universes. This makes it an ambitious project that could rival even Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Who is the Director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are two of the biggest and most well-known names in feature-length animation. They played important roles in The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009), The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021), and other movies. They came back to write and make Across the Spider-Verse. At first, they wanted to do something on the same scale as the last movie, but the sequel has changed and grown to have the most extensive crew ever put together for an animated movie. Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Kemp Powers (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), and Justin K. Thompson (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) are the three new directors who will lead this huge project. Dave Callaham, who has written for the Marvel multiverse before (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), will work with Lord and Miller on the writing.

We don’t have time to name the crew’s more than a thousand members. However, some of the creative leads include returning composer Daniel Pemberton (Steve Jobs), editor Mike Andrews (Shrek 2), production designers Kevin Aymeric (Arcane) and Patrick O’Keefe (Fragile), art director Araiz Khalid (Ms. Marvel), and costume designer Brooklyn El-Omar (Raya and the Last Dragon).

Can We Expect to See the Third Film in the Spider-Verse Trilogy?

Even though “Part One” isn’t in the title anymore, “Across the Spider-Verse” is still the first part of a two-part story. The next movie, which is currently called Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, will come out less than a year later on March 29, 2024. This will be the end of this epic and groundbreaking trilogy.
