Sri Lankan president asks Putin to get out of economic crisis

According to the Kremlin’s press service, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa discussed by telephone issues of trade and economic cooperation in the fields of energy, agriculture and transport.

According to the Kremlin’s statement released today, the heads of the two states discussed topical issues of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, in particular in the fields of energy, agriculture and transport, and agreed to continue contacts at various levels.

In light of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which is celebrated in 2022, mutual intentions were confirmed to further develop relations between the two countries. The Kremlin indicated that today’s telephone conversation took place on the initiative of the Sri Lankan side.

For his part, the President of Sri Lanka, in a tweet published after the phone call, thanked the President of Russia for the support provided in overcoming the challenges of the past, and added that he asked Putin to provide credit support for fuel imports in order to overcome the economic problems facing Sri Lanka. – Lanka.

The President of Sri Lanka also presented a request for the return of the Russian airline Aeroflot to resume flights to Sri Lanka and said: “We unanimously agree that strengthening bilateral relations in areas such as tourism, trade and culture is of greater importance to strengthen friendship between our two countries.”

Sri Lanka is now facing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, and last week Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa sent a letter to the Russian President asking for cooperation between the two countries on oil purchases.

On June 22, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced the collapse of the country’s economy and said: “The country is facing a very serious situation that goes beyond the simple lack of fuel, gas, electricity and food. Our economy has completely collapsed.”
