Star Wars editor slams ‘terrible’ storylines – ‘Kathleen Kennedy doesn’t have a clue’

The Star Wars franchise was given new life in 2015 with the beginning of the sequel trilogy, starting with The Force Awakens. Directed by Abrams, the film continued the epic story of the franchise while introducing the next generation of characters. The second and third films, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, did extremely well commercially (making more than $1.4 billion worldwide) but were criticised by a portion of the fandom. Now, George Lucas’ ex-wife, Marcia Lucas, has joined in with the criticisms.

Speaking out in JW Rinzler’s new book, Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life, Lucas was asked about the “current state” of Star Wars.

She said: “The storylines are terrible. Just terrible. Awful. You can quote me – ‘JJ Abrams, Kathy Kennedy – talk to me.'”

The editor then set her sights on Kennedy, who is the President of Lucasfilm. She said: “I like Kathleen. I always liked her. She was full of beans. She was really smart and really bright – really wonderful woman. And I liked her husband, Frank. I liked them a lot.

“Now that she’s running Lucasfilm and making movies, it seems to me that Kathy Kennedy and JJ Abrams don’t have a clue about Star Wars. They don’t get it.” (Via FlickeringMyth)

Marcia, who edited the first three films in the series – A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi – took particular umbrage with the death of the original trilogy of characters, played by Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.

Marcia, who was married to George Lucas from 1969 to 1983, stated: “JJ Abrams is writing these stories – when I saw that movie where they kill Han Solo, I was furious. I was furious when they killed Han Solo. Absolutely, positively there was no rhyme or reason to it.

She added: “They have Luke disintegrate. They killed Han Solo. They killed Luke Skywalker. And they don’t have Princess Leia anymore. And they’re spitting out movies every year.”

Finally, Marcia hit out at the new protagonist of the series, Rey (Daisy Ridley).

She said: “They think it’s important to appeal to a woman’s audience, so now their main character is this female, who’s supposed to have Jedi powers, but we don’t know how she got Jedi powers or who she is. It sucks.”

Although the former Star Wars boss was not very happy about the franchise, the likes of George Lucas and Mark Hamill have been very supportive of the series.

George was quoted in saying The Last Jedi was “beautifully made”, while Hamill is still involved in the series to this day.

Earlier this year Hamill made a return to the series in the final episode of The Mandalorian season 2.

During the epic scenes, a younger Luke Skywalker returned to take Grogu/Baby Yoda to his own Jedi school.

The future of the Star Wars franchise has been left up in the air, however.

Finn star John Boyega previously hit out at Disney for their treatment of him during filming.

Boyega said: “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.” (Via GQ)

Ridley has been open to returning, previously announcing: “I mean, never say never. I’m always open to a revisit, but also the beautiful thing is it’s this wonderful, huge universe with all of these stories that have yet to be told. I think there’s a lot of cool things to be made before any potential revisit.

“I don’t think it’ll ever feel properly like goodbye because it’s such a wonderful little web of people. It’s a really nice club to be a part of. Plus, I had such a good time. I loved my experience. In terms of revisiting the character, I think that’s a bye-bye for now,” she said.

The Star Wars films are available on Disney Plus now.
