Stoltenberg: Russia is trying to stop fighting in Ukraine before launching a new offensive in spring

Russia is trying to stop the fighting in Ukraine during the winter to build up its strength in preparing for a new offensive in spring, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.

“What we are seeing now is that Russia is trying to impose some kind of suspension of this war, at least for a short time, in so it can regroup, rally, rally and then try to launch a big, broader offensive next spring,” Stoltenberg said in an event organized by the British newspaper “Financial Times”. .

The NATO secretary general added that NATO members are continuing to provide “unprecedented” arms and support to Ukraine despite fears that Western stockpiles may run out.

“Adding new systems is just as important as ensuring that systems or weapons we’ve already delivered work,” Stoltenberg noted. “That means they need a lot of ammunition, spare parts and maintenance,” he said.

The situation has stabilised in first line in Ukraine since Kiev’s forces sensationally liberated the city of Kherson and surrounding areas on the western bank of the Dnieper River last month.

The fiercest battles are currently centered around the city of Bakhmut (east), which Russian forces have been trying to control for months.
The United States expects fighting to continue at a “low pace” in the coming months as both sides try to rebuild their forces.

Stoltenberg said he had “no other information” about alleged Ukrainian marching attacks on air bases in Russia, after the Americans confirmed that they “do not allow or encourage” such attacks by Kiev.

The secretary general considered that the conditions for a peaceful solution to the conflict “are not available because Russia has shown no indication of its commitment to negotiations that respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
