Strikes are spreading in Britain … and the government is considering calling up the military

The head of the ruling Conservative Party in Britain’s Nazim Al-Zahawi revealed on Sunday that the British government is considering using the military to help ensure continuity of public services, if workers go on strike in key sectors, including the Public Health Authority.

Al-Zahawi called on unions to fight and negotiate rather than strike, indicating that it is important for the government to have alternative plans.

“We are studying the use of the military, with a specialized response force … at maximum capacity,” he said, adding that the military could be used to drive ambulances.

Al-Zahawi once again blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine for fueling high energy prices and inflation, and called on public sector workers to “unite”.

Thousands of strikers

Britain is already seeing strikes in a number of sectors, but is now facing a strike of thousands of nurses in England and ambulance personnel in England and Wales, which have in plans to strike by the end of the month for pay and working conditions.

The government has repeatedly called on workers to stop the strike, saying it cannot afford wage increases in line with inflation and that even if it can meet their demands, such increases will increase inflation.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has been in power for just over a month, faces a range of problems, including what could be a prolonged slump in the run-up to an election that opinion polls suggest Conservatives they will lose.

The Sunday Times reported that Sunak could revive plans to limit the right to strike for public sector workers, including NHS staff, teachers and firefighters, while the Sunday Telegraph said pharmacists could be called on help patients if health workers go on strike later in the year. This month.
