One study concluded that green tea may protect against Alzheimer’s disease due to its antioxidant content.
A study published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine strongly argues that green tea should be added to the list of healthy drinks.
The herbal drink is rich in flavonoids called catechins, plant chemicals that help protect plants from environmental toxins.
However, these phytochemicals also extend their protective power to humans, as research has shown that they can reduce the plaque that is closely associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Catechins have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be the reason for their ability to remove plaque.
Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by a lack of communication between nerve cells in the brain, resulting in loss of function and cell death.
In a brain like this, abnormal levels of certain naturally occurring proteins stick together, forming plaques and disrupting cell function.
This is where the benefits of green tea come into play, its ability to reduce plaque buildup.
In addition, the researchers note that phytochemicals are able to do this with little to no side effects.
And if you’re not a green tea fan, you can still reap these benefits from other foods and drinks.
Researchers have found that other compounds, including resveratrol, curcumin, the diabetes drug metformin, and citicoline, also prevent plaque formation.
Resveratrol is found in blueberries, while curcumin is found in the yellow spice known as turmeric. Citicoline is found in organ meats, eggs, chicken, fish, and peanuts.
The research team tested 21 compounds in a 3D neural tissue model made from a non-reactive silk sponge implanted with human skin cells that were converted into self-renewing neural stem cells.
Lead author, Dr. Dana Kearns, said: “We are lucky because some of them have been shown to be very effective. In the case of these tested compounds, they had almost no visible plaque after about a week.”
