Sudanese importers call for strike in protest "impulsive decisions"

The National Chamber of Sudanese Importers has called on all its members to halt imports and pay customs duties starting next Sunday for a period of three days to protest what it called “impromptu” government decisions.

The Chamber said in a statement that this was done in order to reach an agreement with the Sudanese Ministry of Finance on a 27 percent increase in the customs rate of the dollar, and described this increase as a threat to the importing sector, the private sector and the Sudanese economy as a whole.

The Chamber deplored what it called the impromptu, unfair and ill-considered decisions and stated that it did not “participate in them” although it is “the original party to these decisions”.

These decisions included an increase in the foreign exchange rate from £445 to £564, which the Chamber believed was reflected in customs duties by 30.8 per cent.
The Chamber has indicated that it will hold a press conference on these matters.
