Sunak: No negotiations before Russia withdraws from Ukraine

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stressed on Monday that a Russian withdrawal from Ukraine must precede any negotiations.

New artillery pack

In addition, Sunak intends to announce the supply of a new package of artillery ammunition to Ukraine on Monday during a meeting in Riga bringing together the leaders of the Northern European and Baltic countries, as well as the Netherlands.

Sunak arrives today in Latvia to attend a meeting of member states of the British-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) coalition where efforts to deal with the Russians will be discussed.

“Maintain the level of support for Ukraine”

A statement released by the British prime minister’s office said Sunak will call on the leaders of the countries in this coalition to maintain levels of support for Ukraine in 2022 or increase them in 2023.

He added that Sunak will also announce that his country will supply Kiev with “hundreds of thousands of artillery shells next year, under a contract worth £250m ($304m), ensuring the continuous flow of munitions from base artillery to Ukraine throughout 2023.”

The first to provide support

The statement indicated that Britain was the first to “provide defense assistance to Ukraine, including the dispatch of more missile launch systems and, most recently, 125 anti-aircraft guns”.

“We have also delivered more than 100,000 rounds of ammunition since February, as deliveries directly correlate with the success of land restitution operations in Ukraine,” he said.

Last month, Sunak visited Kiev, pledging more support in its fight against Russian forces.

The President, Volodymyr Zelensky, will address the coalition meeting, which will be attended by the leaders of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Great Britain.
